The Pantheon is the oldest church in Rome, dating back to about 30 B.C.
The building has no windows, and aside from the doors and the hole in
the roof, it would have been quite dark before the introduction of the
electric lights.
Marcus Agrippa wanted to be remembered, so he had workman chisel
his name on the front.
It’s got a huge hole (called an oculus) at the top, about
30 feet wide (either to let the light in, or the demons out...?).
"Away in a manger, no room in the inn, little baby Jesus found
some space in Rome…”
Originally dedicated to the planetary gods, this church
is now a full-fledged, Vatican-sanctioned church, as evidenced by
its art.
Is it me, or do some of these female statues look a little manly?
Some famous dead people reside here -- Raphael along with some Italian
kings and such.
