Growing up, Charlie and his pal Danny were in awe of local rough-and-tumble Mick. At 16, Charlie witnesses Mick beat the living snot out of a few snobby high school peers. Socially responsible tells the police, and Mick is arrested, but Charlie backs out of cooperating, and Mick is released. Advance three years, Danny and Charlie are freshman roommates at college, and Mick appears for a short visit. The trio makes the rounds of parties, pubs and lazy days with their rich contemporaries, including Mary... Mick is interested in her, and she seemingly in Mick, despite Charlie having the hots for her (though never expressed, but only after she and Mick became an item). As the days stretch into weeks, it's apparent Mick doesn't plan to go back home anytime soon, and Charlie continues to fret about Mick knowing he was the snitch who got him arrested years before. Mick jumps rich kid Leo, and Mary is done with him. Meanwhile, Charlie stumbles across a newspaper article that notes a guy killed in a bar brawl (where they all used to hang out); Charlie confronts Danny, who admits he knows it was Mick, but Mick claims self-defense. Charlie had confessed to Mick he called the cops, and it a drunken moment Mick tells him he already knew -- Mick saw it in Charlie's eyes when he arrived at their dorm room. Mick goes after Mary (she again tells him itís over), Charlie arrives, the two guys fight, but campus police show up. Mick jumps into the water and swims off in the dark and is never found; he and Danny figure he went underground.
