01/10/2005: "No Midgets and Too Much Water"
So, I went to Disneyland yesterday. Yup, on a Sunday. In the rain, during storms that caused all sorts of flooding, traffic snarls, and people to avoid the park like they avoid phone solicitors. Trip-wise, the no lines bit meant the TTR (Time To Ride) for things was short, like: Splash Mountain (1 minute), Pirates (no wait), Winnie the Pooh ride (no wait), Thunder Mountain (2 minutes, no fatalities), and Roger Rabbit (1 minute) to note a few. But the best parts were things overheard:
* A woman was trying to argue her 5-year-old onto Indiana Jones. The kid was waaayyy too short. She was challenging Tobey to let her kid ride anyway, asking, well, what if he were a short 50-year-old. Tobey told her he couldn't ride. What if he had stunted growth; couldn't ride. What if he were a midget? Again, he couldn't ride.
* On the river around Tom Sawyer's Island, the paddleboat wasn't running. One man asked the trio of employees when the ride would be running again. The employee standing in the middle told the man the ride would re-open "as soon as the water levels go down; there's too much water in the river." Too much water in the river... okeyyy... but it was nice. And in just 3 1/2 hours, I'd visited every ride that was open and running, although yes, a few were closed (Haunted Mansion to switch back to the normal theme from the Nightmare Before Christmas theme; Teacups was closed due to the rain).
